But it was played constantly on MTV and the radio, and even by friends, so my impression was that it was well-liked. Again I was uncertain how I felt about it-the performances were a bit rough and primitive, and I didn't know the Meat Puppets to care about that stuff. When Unplugged came along, it seemed really popular to me. I didn't really have a sense of the public reaction to it, outside of that, though obviously "Heart Shaped Box" was doing very well. (I feel differently and quite like the album now, though.) Of my friends, one really loved the album-more than Nevermind-and a few seemed uncertain. I even liked some very uncommercial music, but this felt like they were undermining what they were good at just to make a point. It felt like a conscious eff-all-of-this from Cobain, who had been visibly and audibly uncomfortable with his success for some time already. ![]() ![]() My two cents: personally, I thought the album was a hair too abrasive and willfully anti-pop, compared to Nevermind. ![]() It's just eye-opening to read some of these and see 1) how they sometimes contradict each other, and 2) how they support or contradict my own experiences on the ground, at the time. Replies in here are pretty interesting, and I wonder how many of them reflect more that person's reaction at the time rather than an accurate summation of the general public.
